I have over 12 years of experience in writing high school and university papers and 8 years of experience in tutoring. I have tutored others in a variety of subjects, including marketing, management, history and English classes as well as job cover letters. When working on group papers in my MBA program, I did all the editing. My track record is in the results, as my students earn top grades on papers with which I have helped. I too consistently earned top grades on my own writing in my grad program and scored high enough on the GMAT AWA (Analytical Writing Assessment) that I was waived from taking the Writing Proficiency Exam to graduate from CSULB. As the old saying goes, “Actions speak louder than words.” I love tutoring others in writing, history, and literature and I show it with my passion when working with others. I do not regard tutoring as “a way to pay the bills,” but as an activity to help others in areas that I find fascinating as I too learn. Effective tutoring includes understanding the student. As Atticus Finch remarked in To Kill a Mockingbird, "You never really know a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." While I am now in a position to help others, I needed tutoring when I was in high school and sometimes worked with tutors who were impatient and hurtful. I practice Atticus Finch's philosophy and do not get impatient, frustrated or insulting, because I know how hurtful and discouraging it is. While studying at the University of Iowa, I was very fortunate to take writing classes in the world renowned Iowa Writer’s Workshop. What impressed me most was how encouraging yet honest they were. They instilled the mentality of rewrite after rewrite, with the encouragement that every revision improves the finished product. I approach every writing-tutoring job with the mentality of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
