Experience

PREVIOUS TUTORING EXPERIENCE The Rogers Family · Provided in-home tutoring services to adolescent male (11-13 yrs) student with an attention deficit diagnosis and previously below-grade-level scores in areas of language arts. · Collaborated closely with parents on student’s progress. Vina Danks · Provided tutoring and mentorship in small group format to low-income, 1st and 2nd generation Latino adolescents with moderate learning disabilities to assist with development of reading and language skills. · Created a “book club” for students in the program to foster reading skills and enjoyment. · Cultivated strong and supportive relationships with students and continued private pro-bono tutoring after the program’s cancellation. WHY I WANT TO TUTOR: I am both a social worker, and come with years of tutoring experience. At the very core is the fact that I love kids, believe in each one’s potential, and have the ability to form strong rapport and working relationships with a diverse body of students. I can listen and figure out the best strategies for them; I am also adept at parent and teacher communication to really tailor my tutoring to what the child needs. I have ADHD and learning disabilities myself, and had to navigate the school system with my own tutor. Not only do I feel that it’s important to give back, but the perspective of having been in those shoes has developed in me passion for the field, patience, an ability to speak to students’ level of comprehension, an ability to put students at ease, and persistence in reaching objectives. I am currently working at a job I love in the field of clinical social work, but am not getting enough paid hours. Rather than find a new job, I'd love to supplement it with something else I love doing!

Hobbies

As I said, I am a social work therapist, and love, love, love the field. In my free time, art is my most regular hobby. I am a transplant from the East Coast, so am still--3 years later--enamored with the California weather. I love the beach, or just walking around with a friend in the sun. The two things I hear stand out most about me are my sense of humor and my peaceful demeanor.
