Experience
During high school, I fell in love with literature, writing, and history. I attended Earlham Collage, earned my Bachelor of Art in History, and then later completed my Master of Art in Teaching, with the goal of becoming a history teacher. After graduating, I took a job tutoring for Sylvan Learning Center. I tutored a variety of different subjects for seven years. During this time, I taught Writing and History online. When I am tutoring, I tend to focus on two things: my connection to the student and the student's connection to the material being studied. I try to form a connection to the student by listening to their needs. I try to connect the student to the material by being flexible, adapting the lessons as needed, and asking questions that challenge the student to think about the subject on a deeper level. I do not want my student to be able to merely repeat the material back to me. I want them to be able to understand the material on a meaningful level, and be able to relate the subject to their daily life. In my free time, I like to read and write. I was a long-distance runner in high school and continued to run for enjoyment throughout college. I enjoy playing Ultimate Frisbee, reading the news, and watching movies.
